Creating Your ANSI eStandards eSubscription
How do I set up an eSubscription account on the eStandards Store web site?
Click on the "My User Profile" option at the left of the page to create a user ID and password.
Why do I have to sign in? Secure shopping and privacy are the two best reasons. It also makes shopping faster
by remembering you when you return to the store and by keeping on the "My eSubscriptions"
page a history of the eSubscriptions you've bought.
I already signed in once. Why do I have to sign
in again?
Your sign-in information will not be recognized if your cookies are disabled or
if you are using a different browser. For instance, if you used Internet Explorer
to register the first time, you will have to sign in again if you are using the
Netscape browser.
Why do you need my e-mail address and a password?
After you complete your order, we use your e-mail address to send an order confirmation.
This e-mail address also allows us to send information about updates and also eSubscription
reminders. Your password helps to keep your information safe - especially if you're
sharing a computer.
I forgot my password, what should I do?
From the login screen, you can select the radio button, “Forgot my password” and
a new password will be e-mailed to you instantly.

Reading Your Electronic Documents
I downloaded the eStandard but it won't open. What should I do?
First make sure that you have the full version of Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher installed
and activated on your computer. Try double-clicking the icon for the .pdf file that
you downloaded. If that doesn't work, right-click on the file icon, select Open With Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher. Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher has replaced
earlier versions of Acrobat Reader. You can now use Adobe Reader as an eBook Reader,
which is the format that ANSI uses for its eStandards. If you didn't activate an
eBooks account when you installed Adobe Reader, you'll be prompted to do so the
first time you attempt to download or read an eBook. Alternatively, you can manually
activate an account. To manually activate an eBooks account:
- Connect to the Internet.
- In Adobe Reader, choose Tools > eBook Web Services > Adobe DRM Activator.
- If the Security Alert dialog box opens, click OK to connect to the Adobe DRM Activator Web site, and then follow the on-screen prompts.
If you don't have the full version of Adobe Reader, you are prompted to install
the eBooks plug-in the first time you try to open an eBook. Alternatively, you can
manually install the plug-in.
To manually install the eBooks plug-in:
- In Adobe Reader, choose Help > Updates.
- Select eBooks Package from the Available list, and then click Update.
When I transferred my PDF to another computer, I
couldn't open it. Why?
ANSI eStandards are designed to be accessed only from the one computer onto which
they were originally downloaded. This and other protection methods are used to assure
that the copyright remains intact.
I have a new computer. Can I transfer my eSubscriptions
to it?

What is an eStandard (eBook)?
An eBook is an electronic edition of a physical book. Adobe's eBook technology is
based on Adobe PDF which can be read on Windows and Macintosh computers, and PalmOS
PDAs. ANSI eStandards use the eBook format.
How is an eBook (eStandard) different from a PDF
file?
A PDF eBook is simply a PDF file that is copyright protected using Adobe DRM (see DRM). eBooks may also have certain permissions set that
control if the eStandards can be printed or when it expires. ANSI eSubscription
standards permit printing, and are set to be renewed after a one-year eSubscription
period.
What do I need in order to read eBooks (eStandards)
on my computer?
In order to read PDF eBooks all you need is the free Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher software (Windows,
Mac or Palm OS) and an internet connection.
Do I need to be online to read eBooks (eStandards)?
No, you don't need to be online to read eBooks. After the eBook is downloaded you
can disconnect from the network and read it off-line.
Can I read eBooks (eStandards) on PDAs?
Yes, you can read PDF eBooks on a Palm OS device using Adobe Reader for Palm OS
v3 or higher. You must first download the eBook to a PC or MacOS X computer using
Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher and then transfer to the PDA.
Can I print my eBooks?
Yes, one of the main advantages of PDF eBooks is that a copy can be printed for
individual use if the publisher has enabled printing.
What happened to the Acrobat eBook Reader?
Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher has replaced the Acrobat eBook Reader 2.2. If you are
using the Acrobat eBook Reader, we recommend that you upgrade to the free Adobe
Reader 6.0.1 or higher which is a higher-quality product and includes the ability
to send eBooks to PalmOS devices.
How do I read eBooks in Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher?
eBooks are viewable just like other PDF files, however, there are some initial steps
required to activate your software. When you first try to open a PDF eBook, you
will be prompted to activate Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher. Once you have completed
the activation process, you will be able to view your eBook with the Adobe Reader.
Where are my eStandards stored on my computer?
To access your eBooks in Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher, open "My Bookshelf" from
the File menu. Click on the eBooks icon and select My Bookshelf. The actual PDF
files are stored in the following locations:
Windows: "My eBooks" folder in the My Documents directory
MacOS: "eBooks" folder within the Documents folder.
Can I send my eStandards to someone else?
Your eSubscriptions are licensed for use by a single user, the purchaser. They are
"locked" to the computer on which the files were first opened.
Can I add other PDF files to the Bookshelf?
Yes. Open the Bookshelf and click on the 'Add File' button. You can then select
any PDF file and add it to the Bookshelf.
How do I back up my eStandards?
You can back up your eStandards using the Backup button in "My Bookshelf". This
will copy your eStandards to another location such as a hard drive, file server
or CD. However, you won't be able to view the eStandards from another PC or Macintosh
unless it has also been activated under your account in the Adobe DRM Activator.
Can I view my eSubscription standards on different
devices?
You can view your eSubscriptions on a PC or Macintosh or PalmOS device. Adobe is
currently investigating the possibility of expanding the number of devices that
a user can use to view eBooks.
When I open my eStandards PDF files, why am I asked
to go to a website?
You are asked to go to a website to begin the DRM Activation process (see
Activation below). This is a one-time activation.
How do I know when my eSubscription eStandard expires?
Your eSubscription standard will have a stopwatch icon in the upper right corner
of the cover image in "My Bookshelf". If you click on the stopwatch icon you'll
see the expiration date.
The maximum number of users has been reached on
my eSubscription. I'm unable to access the standards when clicking on "Show Details/Sign
In".
The maximum number of users for your subscription are currently accessing documents.
One of those users will have to sign out from the eSubscription for you to gain
access. A user can sign out by clicking on "Sign Out" on the right side of the eSubscription
box on the "My eSubscriptions" page. Once that is done, you will be able to log
on with your eSubscription code. Please contact ANSI Customer Service for further

Activation
What is Activation and why is it required?
Activation is a process that enables your device, whether it's a computer or a PDA,
to view digitally-protected content like eStandards. Technically, by activating,
you are downloading keys that are needed to open the eSubscriptions that you buy.
Why do I need a Microsoft Passport account?
Microsoft Passport is a free account that Adobe PDF eBook users obtain through Microsoft.
It's one way to identify users as unique individuals online. It enables users to
view digitally protected content, like ANSI eStandards, on more than one device
(for example, one PC or Mac and one PDA). If you prefer, you may create and use
an Adobe account rather than a Microsoft Passport account
What is an Adobe ID?
An Adobe ID is used as another free method of identifying you as a unique individual online.
What kind of devices can I activate?
You can activate Windows and Macintosh computers as well as PalmOS devices.
How do I de-activate a device?
You cannot de-activate a device.
Can I read eSubscription eStandards without activating?
No. With Adobe Reader 6.0.1 or higher, you cannot read Adobe PDF eBooks (eStandards)
without activating your device. The activation process is a one-time process that
only takes a few moments.
Adobe DRM
What is DRM?
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. DRM is technology allows publisher to
protect copyrighted material such as eStandards by defining the abilities or "rights".
These rights determine what users can to do with the eBooks (like opening, copying,
printing). This technology is intended to protect the works of authors by controlling
the distribution of their content to authorized users. By using DRM, publishers
and authors are able to continue to offer copyrighted publications electronically.
What is Adobe DRM?
Adobe DRM is Adobe's Digital Rights Management system, which is based on protecting
the copyright of PDF documents and provides a flexible system for both publishers
as well as users.
What is the Adobe DRM Activator?
The Adobe DRM Activator is a website that allows you to activate your computer or
PalmOS device for viewing eBooks and protected documents. To access this site from
Adobe Reader, go to the Advanced menu, select eBook Web Services, then select the
Adobe DRM Activator.
